With age, getting adequate amounts of nutrients becomes more difficult, especially as physical limitations make preparing meals, chewing, or even swallowing difficult. If you have an aging parent or loved one and are concerned that he or she is not getting enough nutrients, consider serving smoothies for breakfast or in between meals. Smoothies are an easy way to nourish the body and can ensure that seniors get the recommended daily amounts of vegetables and fruits each day.
With the warmer summer months ahead, the caregivers at Home Care Assistance of Chandler wanted to share a favorite recipe for a healthy blackberry cherry green smoothie. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 cup cherries
- 1 cup blackberries
- 2 bananas, peeled
- ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla
- 3 cups fresh baby spinach
- 8 ounces of filtered water
- ½ cup of ice
Mix all ingredients in a blender and blend to desired consistency. Pour and serve while cold or refrigerate and serve for later in the day.
So why do our in-home caregivers love this smoothie recipe? First, it’s full of antioxidants, which play an important role in protecting cells from damage, thus reducing the risk for cancers, cardiovascular conditions, and eye problems, and also promotes a healthy immune system. Blackberries and spinach are also packed with vitamin C and bioflavonoids which are known to reduce inflammation, helping to manage the symptoms of conditions like arthritis.
